STRETFORD and URMSTON
My Constituency
Stretford and Urmston is a great place and was established only in 1997, following boundary changes;
It comprises the Trafford Council wards of Clifford, Gorse Hill, Longford, Stretford, Urmston,
Davyhulme East, Davyhulme West, Flixton and Bucklow.
It is a very diverse constituency including as it does the multi-cultural community of Old Trafford,
suburban communities such as Davyhulme and Flixton, communities in Partington and Carrington on the rural fringe,
and the town centres of Stretford and Urmston.
It is also home to the Trafford Centre, Manchester United Football Club and Lancashire Cricket Club.
Since Labour came to power, Stretford and Urmston has become a better place to live and work.
There are more people working than ever before with hundreds of residents helped back to work
through the New Deal.
Unemployment since 1997 has been halved, low interest and mortgage rates are helping more families
and tax credits are raising the income of lower paid families and pensioners.
Most crime has fallen with the increased numbers of Police and Community Support Workers,
One of my priorities has been to tackle the anti-social behaviour of the minority who make
life a misery for the rest. We have had success with the police using new powers the
Government have introduced.
Every three and four year old now has a guaranteed free nursery place
and pensioners have had record amounts - up to £400 - of winter allowances.
Stretford and Urmston is doing well and has an exciting future.
